Somewhat to my surprise, I actually like having both panes and tabs -- It allows me to group related notes into a pane and to have multiple panes focusing on sub-areas of that workspace.
Consequently, I may have several panes, each with several tabs. Sometimes I want to have work on two panes side by side but There is an intervening pane (or two).
It would be very useful to be able to collapse the intervening panes and then later to expand them.
