WordPress widget settings reset to blank

What steps will reproduce the problem?

I haven't gotten it down just yet, but it seems like it breaks when I
change the site theme's PHP or CSS, or activate certain plug-ins (not sure
which as it doesn't always happen and i don't notice it for a while).

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Public: Instead of displaying the timeline, a blank box displays.
Admin: All previously configured setting fields go blank. (just the content
of input fields, not the whole admin interface)

What version of the product are you using? On what browser and what
operating system?

WP Simile Timeline 0.4.5.4
WordPress 2.8
LAMP jumpbox
(not browser-specific)

Please provide any additional information below.
Other options to investigate: Can I hard code the widget's setting's into a
page?
