Evaluate whether the Vancouver citation style needs to be updated #6363

Describe the problem you would like to solve The vancouver.csl citation style does not handle DOIs well. It is unclear precisely how the Vancouver citation style should handle DOIs, but it does not appear to have been updated in a while.

Describe the solution you'd like An evaluation needs to be undertaken to determine if the vancouver.csl citation style needs to be updated, or if an updated version of it, such as elsevier-vancouver.csl, better supports our journals.

Marie-Helene, who raised this issue, did a fair amount of research and came to uncertain conclusions:

Finally after consulting the various vancouver.csl (and vancouver.csl) files in the https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles repository (certain of which do include provisions for DOI, mostly depending on the document type) and also by asking a few of my librarian colleagues, I decided not to suggest any changes to the user community for the vancouver.csl file since I wouldn’t be very good at making enlightened arguments…The file is rather old and I am unsure of which other changes are related to DOI vs URL (access date, etc.)…

They nevertheless decided to replace vancouver.csl with elsevier-vancouver.csl in their own installations. If we deem this to be a more accurate or useful version of the Vancouver style, we should replace our own citation style.

There are no plans to update vancouver.csl at the citation styles repository (see discussion). But it sounds like some variations of the Vancouver format exist to support DOIs.
