The version in the program is a bit confusing. The last one issued by David Trinkle was 2.6 on 12 Aug 1993, the one being used on TeXLive 2018 right now, and this one has a lower number, and one can only get it from the man-page.
It would be really helpful to have a version number on the command line so we could easily compare them for bug reports and other purposes.
