NFC sometimes stops working and uses a lot of CPU & battery #44

Sometimes when I go to use NFC - via Google Pay (touching on when boarding public transport, or paying at a store) - nothing looks out of the ordinary, but it doesn't register at all on the terminal. I have to go into system settings and toggle NFC off and on again to then be able to use it.

Recently, I noticed the NFC service using a lot of battery. I presume this is closely related, although I haven't yet established a correlation. See my usage screenshots from System Panel 2 below. The drop in CPU usage on Saturday night was when I noticed - my phone was almost flat at the end of the day, despite having barely used it! I investigated at that point, saw it was NFC, and turned off NFC. I turned it back on a few hours later to compare the difference, which was negligible.
