Plazi workshop invitation: April 2023

The NSCF, together with Swiss NGO Plazi, will be hosting a four day workshop on digitising taxonomic literature from 18 –- 21 April 2023. Plazi is a world leader in the biodiversity informatics space, having digitised nearly 1 million taxonomic treatments and 1.3 million specimen citations from almost 60 000 articles to date, thus mobilising taxonomic data on an unprecedented scale. This workshop will cover the fundamentals of taxonomic data digitization from published literature, mobilising digital data online, and using digitised data from Plazi in your own work. The South African endemic plant family Bruniaceae (~80 species) will serve as our focal taxon with the goal of digitising as much of the relevant literature as possible, and comparing results with currently available checklists and taxonomic authorities. Not a botanist? All taxon specialists are welcome. This workshop will be an excellent opportunity for anyone interested to learn about global initiatives in biodiversity informatics and willing to get their hands dirty in the process.

The workshop will take place at the Plant and Soil Sciences building at the University of Pretoria Hatfield Campus. Computers, software, and lunch each day will be provided. Travel and accommodation will be provided for NSCF participants based outside of Gauteng.

Please apply to attend the course on the registration link below. As space is limited we may not be able to accommodate everyone, and preference will be given to staff from NSCF participating institutions. Interested postgraduate students are also welcome to apply. Applications will close on 27 January.
