treatment in BLR: auxiliary files, DWCA, GBIF #80

Dear All here a news from @timrobertson100 from GBIF regarding the usage of Zenodo as a staging area for DWCA to be harvested by GBIF. This might contribute to our question whether we should add as auxiliary file our DWCA to the deposit of the article from which the DWCA is produced. This would be a way in the future, especially if we expect third parties to add data via their own workflows.

Right now, our current way to add data to GBIF is very efficient though and probably not in need in the short term.

I’d just like to let you know – in case you don’t – that there is a new connection to GBIF using Zenodo.

Evgeniy (CC’ed) has implemented a mechanism whereby EarthCape can export datasets into Zenodo for indexing by GBIF. EarthCape is a sophisticated biodiversity data management platform used especially in Europe, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

This connection was specifically made to enable data on protected areas in Russia (200 datasets expected) but we anticipate will also be used by others in the future. The first dataset is: • https://www.gbif.org/dataset/488416a3-50f1-43a0-a1ce-daf1cdbf84ddhttps://zenodo.org/record/3380323#.XW40aZMzbUI

The institutions that will share soon are listed on https://www.gbif.org/publisher/search?country=RU

I’m particularly excited by this because it connects a new data management platform used in an area we lack data and is deployed making use of Zenodo as a reliable “intermediate” repository. This is a model I believe makes sense for many scenarios across GBIF (i.e. using a partner to provide the secure repository).

I anticipate that when the data are ready this will be newsworthy by several groups (GBIF, CERN?, EarthCape – maybe others). Let’s coordinate news around this when the time comes.
