Will need a new prep patch when Open MPI 1.7.4 comes out #327

The ROMIO in the Open MPI repository just got updated to what is in MPICH 3.0.4. When the official release of Open MPI 1.7.4 comes out, we'll more than likely need to generate a new prep patch. Hopefully we'll be able to use the already existing patch for MPICH 3.0.3 to help (it might help if we check if the MPICH 3.0.3 patch applies cleanly to 3.0.4).

Who can we talk to about getting our patch released as part of the official Open MPI 1.7.4?

Are we ready to do that yet? I thought we were waiting for a rewrite of the ad_plfs layer so that we didn't have to keep sending them patches every time the ad_plfs layer changes.

Truly. But I'm wondering if this is a major, infrequent, release that might make it worthwhile.

They generally refresh their ROMIO infrequently, and they are pulling the latest from MPICH (the latest MPICH release is 3.0.4). So, it may not be updated for quite some time. I could ask. Although, if we do have them patch for PLFS, if the ad_plfs layer ever changes for us, then we won't be able to easily use Open MPI for testing; we'd have to "patch the patch" or perhaps unpatch and then repatch.... Is that something we'd like to do?

I don't see that unpatch/repatch is harder than the current patching that we do. So I think we should go for it if this will be our only chance for quite some time. However, they may have standards for providing patches that may be difficult for us given our resource and time constraints....
