In order to build plfs patched openmpi on Cielo, I needed to start with openmpi-1.7.4 per Nathan Hjelm. Even though the mpi_adio patches imply 1.7.x compatability I got a patch error as follows.
Error: Using ..../src/plfs/patches/openmpi/ompi-1.7.x-plfs-prep.patch failed.
Nathan also mentioned that the openmpi patch should be compatbile with mpich 3.0.4 patch but I am not sure how that applies to our patching methodology
