IDEA: Use topic and pins of the Slack channel to link to key resources. #5

Open plocket opened 4 years ago

plocket commented 4 years ago

Why

We want it to be easy to give instructions on how to share knowledge without repeat efforts.

How

Methods some have found useful:

  1. Make the topic of the channel a link to the most useful resource.
  2. Pin other key resources to the Slack channel. Refresh and review regularly.

  1. Brought up as an idea. No vote because each team will have to decide for itself.

Our experience with this idea so far:

  1. No new members look at the topic (where our on-boarding doc link is).
  2. Most people don't remember to look at pins.
  3. Pinned items are very useful when you're looking for a link you need for the millionth time so you can share it with someone.
  4. Pinning an item makes it more visible in the channel chat.
  5. Pinning items temporarily can be really useful if you can remember to unpin them when you're done with them.
  6. Pinned items are useless to new members because the ones that are around the longest sink to the bottom and the new members don't find them.

Conclusion:

They're very useful, but not in the ways we'd expected.
