Closes #18

Some basic upgrades and made a few elements in the controls dynamic to avoid errors around data.

Hi @jingningzhang1 I realized this morning that the app was working (as I expect it to) on Friday. In general the control panel UI does not respond until the user presses 'submit and update'. I think we're all so used to the immediate response that it looked broken, but it works as I would guess it should. Want to take another look?
