make pd~ open a Pd Vanilla version in plugin mode #1648

I'm still not sure how [pd~] works in plgdata, can it open vanilla in standalone?

porres commented 4 months ago

It wouldn't make sense to open vanilla

why?

porres commented 4 months ago

Any real technical reason that makes it impossible? And I don't think "technical" issues on the way make it "not make sense", which was the question... I would assume there'd be technical issues of course.

Not having pd installed doesn't make sense as a reason by the way. We can either ship it or simply tell people to get it. To illustrate this, can you imagine not making Max open Pd because it doesn't make sense because the user might not have pd? But hey, I can open Vanillain max for live, but I can't with plugdata and let me say that it doesn't make any sense that I would need MAX to run vanilla in a DAW 🙂

And now you've made lots of sense and really answered everything 🙂

Anyway, if you can't give a technical reason that makes it impossible, let me add and say that it makes better sense to open Vanilla and let me explicitly say that I don't care and am not requesting it to open another instance of plugdata.

Opening Vanilla is a nice idea because it allows you to run ANY external in the plugin mode and I don't think I need to list anything else

For plugin mode this will likely not/never work

It works in Camomile and Max4Live and I bet you it can happen with PlugData... so I'm sorry if I don't believe it might be likely impossible for whatever reason you're not sharing. And anyway, if you're not gonna discuss this in a constructive way, bring up issues and aim for strategies to overcome them and just show up to say "nah... I don't think that will work", then it really doesn't make sense for you to join the discussion :)
