@blu3mo I added some bounty to this! I also want to say that I like this point you made in your post:
The key lies in creating asymmetry in one aspect of reality to enable the sharing of another. (i.e. make one thing asymmetric so that we could share something else)
- E.g. Realtime language translation allows users to hear voices in their preferred language. This creates asymmetry in the audio space, while now allowing sharing the meaning and content of the conversation.
- Personalized levels of detail in a presentation ensure that each attendee receives the appropriate amount of information. This creates asymmetry in the depth of content, while now sharing the overall message and context.
This seems like a clear way to highlight how ISR & related tech can/should be developed to enhance sharing/cooperation rather than to worsen alienation/separation/escapism. I am reminded of this line from Audrey 's job description / mission statement (discussed in section 2-2):
When we see virtual reality, let’s make it a shared reality.
And I think you are highlighting an important point that there are ways in which creating some limited (and generally more superficial?) perceptual/experiential asymmetry can sometimes facilitate deeper connection in & comprehension of our shared reality. As we discussed, the realtime translation case is a nice motivating example of this.
The current content in 5.2 Immersive Shared Reality focuses on how immersive shared reality (ISR) increases the bandwidth and depth of coexistence. While these aspects are important, I believe that another interesting point worth mentioning is that ISR and computer-mediated reality increase the diversity of subjective reality.
Concepts and examples about ISR in this direction should be added. Its limitations should also be discussed - excessive personalization of subjective reality could lead to isolation. Details: https://blu3mo.com/Thoughts-about-Plurality-and-Immersive-Technology-(WIP)
I'm thinking of making radical edits and seeing what would get accepted and what wouldn't. I'm looking forward to receiving critical feedback. (I guess controversial changes would be an interesting case to test PMP anyway)
