Romans 11:5-7 #14

This one is hard to understand from a nonCalvinist perspective. What does the word elect mean here? Definitely not all the Israelites. And it says God has reserved them for Himself. Does that mean He protected those who already believed or that He worked in their hearts to make them believers?
