Changes in support of minimal workflow #28

Dear Maintainers,

I am using run_qemu in a limited way, build outside the kernel source directory and create vanilla images without needing qemu to set up a special platform to run it in. While run_qemu could do much more it would be great if it could support this minimal workflow also. The changes in this pull request supports this workflow.
