These will need grouping. For the WMF, I grouped rail, narrow_gauge, preserved, funicular together, and subway, light_rail, monorail, and tram together.

WMF osm-bright2 uses 'rail', 'monorail', 'narrow_gauge', 'subway', 'tram' for one group and 'funicular', 'light_rail', 'preserved' for the other. The original osm-bright uses 'light_rail', 'subway', 'narrow_gauge', 'rail', 'tram' in one group, and all others in another group.

I want to display more detail than the styles mentioned above, which means I can do more groups.

I did some grouping with stickies, and am inclined towards

I'm not sure this is the best for funicular or preserved. I've contemplated moving preserved to the same group as rail, and I'm never sure what to do with a funicular.

I am interested in what @Nakaner thinks when he sees the groupings in stickies at the Geofabrik office ;)

Most rail line cartography uses one of four styles

Maybe move funicular to preserved for "tourism railways"? Though I am not sure whatever "funicular is a tourism attraction rather than a public transport" is really generally true.

BTW, I have no idea whatever comments like this above are welcomed here, I assume that they are (based on what I would want in case of publishing a similar project) - but if I made a mistake just tell me.

being an attraction to tourists doesn’t exclude that it is public transport as well
