Modern authentication has been the default authentication experience with SharePoint Online for 2 or more years now and MFA requires the use of modern auth. Currently modern auth is enabled via the -SPOManagementShell switch.
I would propose that Connect-PnPOnline use Modern Auth by default to reduce user friction and confusion.
