Seems like a mixing of terms, this is more a reverse proxy than a load balancer (a reverse proxy can load balance - DNS roundrobin etc). Nginx is one example and is one of if not the most common. This does have an interface out the box though.

[ @The Casual Heroes ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6h97iJRVJBafQ56cRtVcvQ) I was also thinking he has two ssl sessions. One between the end user and cloudflare AND one between cloudflare and the server. Now I get the end to end encryption part but I can't help but notice that CF is now a MITM. Just eliminate the MITM and have the letsencrypt session created on the server itself and not allow CF to do it for you. That topology with two lock on each end of CF looks very shady.

[ @ptaav ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNKmPq9mQySPl1aPPbCD_yQ) Agreed, I use reverse proxy and have for 10 years, and I thought, "Why would I need a load balancer?" So clicked, Disapointed, though it was a good video on reverse proxy for those who might now know. A good reason for load balancing to reference one of his other videos would be for the kubernetes cluster. If you run the control plane through a load balancer, it simplifies a lot of that.

[ @Bruno Vic ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCj1ZQh7p2PDHYDIunSh1tog) But the point is now you have one location to check for all of your services, and Cloudflare should be automagically renewing the certs for you. Assuming that you start here, you would not need to configure certbot/letsencrypt scripts on each host. You also control the MITM point, so it is known who that person is. This does create more potential attack vectors (Cloudflare, Kemp) so someone would want to make sure those platforms and accounts are well protected.

Yeah, I thought load balancing was something to do something like combine two internet connections into one. I'm not network person, but when he started spouting off about reaching different internal appliances from the outside world using subdomains, I was like how TF is that load balancing? His way of relentless salesman speaking and his appearance is so cringey.

I'll admit I was expecting something a little different as well. I was specifically looking for load balancing between two different internet connections. But reverse proxys are cool too, so I don't mind that much to be honest. It's really the 'completely free' part that made my BS-detector go woobly-woop. Riiight... so if it's not money, then what am I paying with instead, hmm?

[ @Mike Wilson ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOKce1H2gq_bgu6ztz8J5dg) I'm not sure how easy it would be to do WAN load balancing entirely in software, though I suppose it could be done. That, in my opinion, is something that is more easily handled with dedicated hardware.

[ @David Faris ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCz9ulvhcfFGSENQFGonGx5A) True, to a point. Depending on whether or not you have a paid Cloudflare account, you should gain significant protection against attacks; the free account actually gets DDOS protection out of the box.

Exactly what I was gonna say. Load balancing only really applies when you have multiple instances of a single services and the load is being distributed amongst them by a proxy. The functionality described here is just reverse proxy.

[ @Jose Hernandez ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9ZgjfaAEwD-a7VBtskK9Ag) the nas is not load balanced, for that to work you should have a way to share session otherwise that just won't work.
The video is a simple reverse proxy, presenting a limited appliance in free version,
Use nginx (proxy manager) will do the same for better perf, less limitation and free :)
At least for real load balancing it should have presented 2 times the same website with real balancing.

Thank you i was Ctrl + F to check if anyone else had picked up : you just can't let it without sayiung revers e proxy cooncept has absolutely nothing to do with laod balancers conept. You could perfectly have one, and not the other, vice-versa as well.

Also its muddying the search results for actual load balancing at home, specifically on setting up routers to mix two or more ISPs.

[ @Jean-Baptiste Lasselle ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGymsagsg1lUxDb2qxjK6Lg) Except load balancing can mean a lot many things and not all of them requires any form of proxy. In a big office area/building, routers will form a load-balancing mesh but will not need proxy.
Imagine the building has several floors, with a primary sequential path in series. If a router in a floor fails, the other routers dependent on it will fail unless load balancing is present to shift to a working router as a failover. This does not require proxy at all. This also does not take into factor the load balancing to mix several ISPs into the network.

Heck, several big companies are now configuring load balancing to include Google cloud exclusive undersea cables or even satellite internet as last resort in failovers. Some nations have to rely on single undersea cable and if that fails all ISPs in that country will fail, so satellite becomes the only option, even though its slow and expensive

[ @Jean-Baptiste Lasselle ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGymsagsg1lUxDb2qxjK6Lg) I think you are too fixated on load balancing on a consumption network which is more utilised in Devops and software. The other load balancing application is in producer networks, like mixing multiple ISPs. Search for LB routers which have more than one WAN input and allocates ISP usage by spead and reliability and for failovers, Thats less around devops, more to do with basic IT department who sets up your PC and network hardware in a company.

[ @intenseevils ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrSaYqlvtyVWytMmJU9amdQ) i state that a reverse proxy is not a load balancer, that a load balancer is not a reverse proxy, and i Can provide a hard proof of that by providing a fully automated reproduceable setup of 2 infrastructures : one infra with a load balancer, and no reverse proxy at all, and one second infra with reverse proxy, with no load balancer at all.
You state that reverse proxy and load balancer are often together, i Say that a horseman and a horse are often together, yet you will end up people scratching their skull if you tell them that a horseman is a horse, or that a horse, is a horseman.
