Polyglot Weekly is an idea I've been kicking around for creating a curated GitHub-backed (@mikeal's addition) site for articles about programming. This weekend I polished up the platform, and wrote an article introducing the concept:
I've talked about this idea with quite a few people now (@ceejbot, @mikeal, @zeke), basically I'd like to add owners to the polyglotweekly organization who represent editors:
anyone can submit an article about programming.
a conversation takes place around the pull request.
an editor can merge a pull on to the master branch, which will result in the website being published.
I'd love to kick off this process with my first article as an experiment (the article in this pull request).
The Platform
The platform for Polyglot Weekly is pretty cool, it consists of:
jthoober: a WebHook listener which runs a build script when articles are merged on to master.
articleify: a static site generation tool that runs as part of the build process.
marky-markdown: the CommonMark markdown renderer used by npmjs.com.
highlights the syntax-highlighter used by the Atom text-editor, which allows for additional grammars to be published as npm modules.
an npm powered build process which uses sass, and browserify.
and finally, the whole site is behind the Fastly CDN (a huge micro-optimization, but this is my weekend project!)
I would love to get people's opinion about this project, and some recommendations with regards to potential editors. It's my goal to get people involved across various programming communities.
Oh also! I'm a terrible designer, it would be amazing to get someone with more of a design eye than myself involved.
Thanks for the edits everyone, I'm going to go ahead and ship this -- I'm going to be taking this coming week off, so I'm hoping to hammer my first post out.
