8 years ago John Dupuis advised that I look into existing article (say, on PLoS One) and review the way they divide their teams.
Additionally, York has a few student groups that I could get in touch with to find people to talk to.
This is sort of the quintessential question before I can start designing anything. If things are team-based with isolated working right now, then the tool may be focused on getting feedback from teammates. If it's entirely individual, then providing advisors with updates and connecting with researchers around the world to supplement skill sets may be a better approach.
