Protein complex assembly can only be shown by assay (as if a complex is present, it could be a balance between assembly and degradation)

• composition is what most of us asses by co-IP or more generally what I call "affinity purification", whether this is followed by Western blot, mass spectrometry etc. This describes the subunit content of the complex at steady-state.
• assembly refers to the biogenesis of the complex, i.e. the process of building it up from individual subunits. This is done rarely because it is technically challenging, although this is what we looked at specifically in some figures of this paper.

how to describe the "abolished complex assembly", this seems to be OK if not complex interactions were detected even if the complex was not detected at all via co-IP? -> probably OK to use assembly here?
