ntr: appearance of intenal membrane bubbles (at shmoo tip) (I thought I had seen something similar, maybe not)

Would it work to use "excess plasma membrane present", or, if you can't tell what kind of membrane, just generic "excess membrane present"?

There are some existing terms for some other membranes, e.g. FYPO:0001556 'excess nuclear envelope present', FYPO:0002652 'excess intracellular endomembrane system present'.

I thought there was something like it.

Yes that will do.

It is the membrane at the shmoo tip after cell fusion, that would be a type of plasma membrane?

Probably ... if you think no one will howl if we say it's plasma membrane, I'll use that.

I looked last night for something else and saw this :

"Plasma membrane fusion also depends on its composition. In pheromone-treated cells, the lipid bilayer at the shmoo tip is more condensed than the rest of the plasma membrane, an organization that depends on sphingolipids [128]. In particular, phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) and ergosterols are enriched at the shmoo tip, and are required for Ste5 scaffold recruitment and MAPK activation [128,129]. Ergosterols are further enriched at the fusion site and deletion of enzymes involved in the late steps of ergosterol biosynthesis causes membrane fusion delays and defects [130,131], suggesting ergosterols may act as cofactors to concentrate some unknown component of the cell-fusion machinery."

there's a GO term for this plasma membrane part ID GO:0070250 Name mating projection membrane Ontology Cellular Component Definition The portion of the plasma membrane surrounding a mating projection, the projection formed by unicellular fungi in response to mating pheromone.

I've gone with plasma membrane for the name, and included a narrow synonym referring to the mating projection membrane term -- (a) it makes the term available more generally; and (b) if there's excess, it may not be restricted to the shmoo.

added another new term: abnormal plasma membrane FYPO:0003278

and the path is now: FYPO:0003136 is_a FYPO:0003278 --> FYPO:0003278 output_of FYPO:0000813
