User logins & customizable gene page #26

We would like to support user logins and user-configurable behavior settings (or just the latter if it can be done without logins). For example, allow people to:

Kim, let us know what you think about this, feasability etc. It might become unnecessary if pages are very configurable, and cookies can remember settings. It depends what you had planned. Would be useful to know your thoughts.

I think a lot could be done via cookies and that would be convenient to the users. But logins and accounts make things a bit more permanent - you can switch browser or computer and your settings move with you.

Everything in Midori's list can be implemented without too much hassle. We'll need a bit of discussion though: eg. should the summary vs full setting be section specific? Should it be gene specific? (ie. maybe full by default is bad for the cdc2 page phenotypes but fine for other genes)

OK good to know!

Is having logins and customisation something we still want to do? If so I'll chip away at it in the background.

ValWood commented 5 years ago

It is but I think you could leave for a while, unless it's a really easy to chip away at thing.

Want something non-Canto to do? Might be useful to play around with Prot Vista (which everyone wants). Also, there are a bunch of canto tickets with "next" which are important for various obscure reasons, might be good to clear out of the way

Continue with this though if there is a special reason why you selected it.

I'll have a look into that.

There's no rush. I read an article recently about how to do this sort of thing and it reminded me that we had thought of doing it for the website. I'll have a go at it later in the year.
