I was thinking of a page a bit like NCBI's search results page. Buy maybe that's more than we need?

I think something similar to this would be fab....

Faceted search should fix this?

From @Antonialock in #758 Currently when yo type in something in the basic search and then hit enter, you get taken to the page of the top hit. It would probably be better to be taken to a results page listing all the "hits" that are shown in the dropdown menu

(a lot of users were having issues with this in the workshop...they type into the simple search looking at the keyboard and press enter so they dont see the dropdown)

vw: OK this is only an issue where a primary name is a synonym of another gene, and people do not know this. One eg is lsd1. In canto we disambiguate and we should do this in these instances.

If it helps we can change the search box so that the first item isn't selected by default. With that change if you type something then press enter nothing would happen. You'd need to type something, move to the item you want (with cursor keys or mouse) and then press enter. I'm not sure that's better.

Does anyone have an opinion on this?

ValWood commented 4 years ago

I would be happy to select, but I think some people (Sam comes to mind), might not like it. I seem to remember Jurg's group specifically asked that you go to the page of the "thing" that you typed with no additional action.

I guess this is good for 'expert' users. Not so good for novices.

kimrutherford commented 4 years ago

OK, I'll leave it as-is for now.

We should also search the documentation and FAQ in the faceted search.

And add an obvious / easy way to search the docs and especially the FAQ from the docs/FAQ pages.

kimrutherford commented 4 years ago

To get things moving, I've added a search box on the main documentation page. We should have a chat to decide if it should be a page of its own.

doc-search-1

doc-search-3

That is extremely cool. I see it's also searching news (not a problem, but good to know for eventual documentation, and might be worth mentioning in the box labe)).

I have not yet formed much of an opinion on whether the search should have its own page.

It's searching all the .md files. That may or may not be what we want but it's easy to tune.

Me neither.

Changed for the morning to say:

Search documentation, news archive and FAQ:

Action, make documention search live! Any follow ups for documentation search in new ticket. I will hide any parts of this ticket referring to the site-wide documentation search as ~'off-topic'~ resolved

(It was not possible to do this)

That's done now: https://www.pombase.org/documentation
