English English spelling #159

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Compile and install
2. Pop up the "Add Gadgets" window
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

One of the first gadgets you're offered is a "Battery metre". Although the
spelling of metre/meter varies depending on meaning and language, in no
language is this the correct spelling. A simple lookup table:

                         Unit of length Measuring device
American English meter meter
English English metre meter

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

0.9.1 Debian Lenny

Please provide any additional information below.

It's a "Battery meter".

As an aside, it's very irritating to the English to see American English
described as "English" and English English described as "UK English".
Whilst American English is undoubtedly the dominant language these days, it
still isn't the English language because it isn't what the English speak.
The last software package which I saw make this mistake was (the now
defunct) Applixware.

The more usual way of offering a choice is to qualify both, e.g.:

"US English" or "UK English".

(I'm a Chinese, so forgive me for my bad English grammar. :)

Thanks for your report. I'll forward the "metre/meter" bug to the author of the
gadget. It's actually not a bug of this product.

I think our "English" means "generic English, which may be US English, or some
English that is understandable by most English-speaking people, though there
are some
incompatibilities", rather than "US English". In fact, we don't support "en-US"
locale for now, just like we don't support "en-AU" locale either.
