since s1 and s2 are computed as attributes of a weights object, maybe the 
individual elements in 
the trace can be kept in an array. we need this in gmm estimation. for example, 
the elements of 
s2 = trace(w'w) are the sum of the column elements squared. these are used in a 
d[i] vector in gmm 
estimation.

sorry if this comes out weird, i am still experimenting with this :-)
