If we can't fit all the samples on, show the ones around the current sample? Not sure about this one – it might make a mess of the "select from parameter table" feature if the table redraws every time to move the newly selected sample to the centre.
I think it would be best to take an emacs-esque approach: page the display but don't centre the current sample. Add visual indicators for "more above" and "more below".
