The network applet icon is not from cosmic, but the network-manager-gnome package (which is installed for different reason than it's applet, given we have our own). It's icon is out of our control, but there is work on the way to simply disable it in the COSMIC desktop environment.
Ah thanks! It's still useful now as it allows me to activate my VPN.
Activating VPN's is coming to the Settings app next week. In 24.04 the icon from network manager is disabled (similar to KDE and GNOME).
The network applet icon is the only one in my tray that renders in color - having everything monochrome would look a little nicer :)
