On POP!_OS rev 38 the entire family of Fira fonts which also include some dozen or more styles that are not even properly recognized by fontconfig are loaded. Even the Fira set available on Google Fonts does not include the super expansive set that is loaded on rev 38.
In particular ones like extra thin which barely show up on a LCD screen when just thin or light is sufficient and on the other end of the spectrum extra bold. As you know, fontconfig has limitations on what family names / styles it will pick up and the meta data in the font has to be perfect for what fontconfig is expecting to pick up. There isn't any practical reason so for many styles of one font to show up in applications like LibreOffice Writer that will never be used.
So for COSMIC please consider curating a set of fonts for practical everyday operation so users won't have to manually prune them out.
