@Drakulix is this due to the lack of software rendering and need for hardware acceleration?
No this looks more like an issue with damage tracking. Missing hardware acceleration will always cause cosmic-comp to fail to start.
@jacobgkau Would it be possible for you to log into the VM via ssh, while cosmic is running and capture the output of drm_info
for me?
@Drakulix Here you go:
So, I can't reproduce this anymore, but the panel isn't rendering properly. Does this match your experience @jacobgkau ?
but the panel isn't rendering properly.
That seems to be some driver/cosmic-panel bug, setting MESA_GLES_VERSION_OVERRIDE=2.0
fixes it.
@Drakulix I am seeing the same thing at this time. The wallpaper & cursor now load, but the panels don't appear.

I guess we should go ahead and transfer the issue to the cosmic-panel repo?

Sounds sensible to me!
Reproduced on cosmic-panel version 4496788 running on Pop!_OS 22.04 in VirtualBox. Let me know if any other output besides the journalctl provided here would be helpful.
I can make sure that the panel always is configured to use gles 2.0, if that fixes it. If that doesn't fix the issue, I can look into it a bit more after finishing overflow.

That might be a suitable work-around for now, but we should investigate this eventually.
Should be fixed by https://github.com/pop-os/cosmic-panel/pull/204/commits/4008d31daf55d53b138fdcab72bc1aa9fda08f20 on the overflow branch
Confirmed. With the overflow
branch, I have a usable VirtualBox session.
I did remove the gles-2
branch while testing to be sure that isn't needed.
Reproduced on version: 6ba7242 (This isn't brand new, it bit me last week when I tried to show off COSMIC Epoch at a meetup event in Sapporo.)
When logging in on VirtualBox, the entire screen is black except for a small box around the cursor. If I hover over the panel or dock, then that area seems to un-blank as long as the cursor is over it, then disappears again when the cursor moves away.

If I start the system with COSMIC Greeter instead of GDM, then the issue also occurs on the login screen.
