Issue/Bug Description: Since the last updates (May 10, 2024), the Workspace Picker is only visible on the left (main) screen ('Workspaces Span Displays' is on): Screenshot from 2024-05-11 11-52-50

Steps to reproduce (if you know): Open the view from which the Workspace-picker is visible with two displays connected and 'Workspaces Span Displays' turned on.

Expected behavior: On both screens, a Workplace Picker is visible, showing applications that are opened within the different Workspaces and making it possible to drag and drop applications between Workspaces.

Other Notes: None

I do have the same problem here and I do not see the windows of the open applications on the external screens, when I press the Super Key to see the workspaces overview.

However: I am not sure if this bug is caused by the pop-cosmic package. Apparently it has not been updated. According to /var/log/apt/history.log the following packages were updated:

Therefore I guess, it is one of the gnome-shell oder mutter packages, that causes the bug.

Any hints on which package it is? Would a rollback fix the problem?

Upstream issue: https://github.com/RensAlthuis/vertical-overview/issues/120

durka commented 5 months ago

That issue is over a year old, and there haven't been any commits in Pop's fork either, but this definitely stopped working very recently as others have said, so there must be another interaction.

I agree with this post. This is a very recent break. Less than a week and a half ago. Is no one at s76 using dual displays?

This break is a productivity killer for sure.

mmstick commented 5 months ago

It is not a recent break in GNOME. It is only recent in Pop!_OS because we were forced to upgrade from GNOME 42.5 to 42.9 due to a security vulnerability affecting all prior versions of GNOME 42.

cb3inco commented 5 months ago

Sorry if my last comments tone seemed harsh. I have a fair bit on my plate recently and this makes using my Darter a bit more challenging when I need to juggle a number of windows.

Guessing there isn't any alternatives to working around this issue?

mmstick commented 5 months ago

If there was, I would welcome the solution so I can patch it.

durka commented 5 months ago

My solution was to turn off Cosmic Workspaces for now, it goes back to horizontal but at least it does have the widget to drag windows around on both displays.

how do you manage to get the keyboard shortcuts working? in my case after i have disabled the Cosmic Workspace, for the Gnome classical workspace, the keyboard shortcuts are not working any more.

LukeTouchFoundry commented 5 months ago

I am experiencing this. Biggest issue for me is that the window thumbnails on the non-primary monitor would not show.

Switching the workspace picker to the left side causes the thumbnails to at least show, however there is still no workspace picker on the non-primary monitor.

Solution? Use the gnome app externsion-manager and deactivate the Pop-OS Cosmic Workspaces, then browse for the extension V-Shell (Vertical Workspaces). It is the best workaround so far. Furthermore, it gives me back the search bar in the workspaces' menu, that was long gone with the system76 customisation of gnome... Screenshot from 2024-05-31 13-16-51 Soon planning to switch to fedora though, seems a more stable distro without the nonsensical Pop-OS workflows, just pure gnome.

Seeing the same issue - hoping for a fix!

mikejaques commented 5 months ago

Everyone hoping for a fix, please understand there isn't going to be any time invested in this to engineer a solution from System76 for Pop. They have committed to COSMIC-DE which won't be Gnome-based, so if the choice is fixing a bug that's only really a nuisance for a several months at best, or push forward on COSMIC, I hope and assume they will choose the latter.

I found this bug report myself because I had the same problem and decided to see if there was an easy fix I was missing. Now that I know its upstream and related to the security upgrade to 42.9 breaking things, I'm not concerned.

I would mark this Closed -> WONTFIX if I could.

cb3inco commented 5 months ago

I suspected this as well @mikejaques

@sscansan solution works for me until Cosmic-de comes.

bazfer commented 4 months ago

@sscansan Thank you, I just tried something else and it worked, which made me delete my comment but you beat me to it. Appreciate the solution and the prompt response.
