sessioninstaller fails to install codecs #81

Closed WatchMkr closed 2 years ago

Reported via twitter.

I think it was M4V video files. And M4a song files. I’m away from my PC for now. Fully updated system, it is inside of a vm on unraid if that helps. I am a root user but not logged in as root.

It appears sessioninstaller is being abandoned upstream. Though a replacement today probably isn't feasible (gnome-codec-install?), we'll need to consider how to replace the functionality for 22.04 +1.

Sessioninstaller seems to be working on 21.10 today, at least for mp4 files:

Also confirmed that an m4a audio file is able to play back after the above codecs were installed.

Even though it works, it's still slow, and not the smoothest experience that I have to manually close and re-open the file when it's done.

@thomas-zimmerman had a good theory -- if a user is running updates or installing something, the apt lock would probably prevent sessioninstaller from working.

That said, sessioninstaller does still seem pretty broken in 22.04, but in different ways. We'll definitely have to give it a little attention before release.

I ran though it again on a different VM and it did work for me too. I tried to screen record but can't upload .mkv and conversion kills quality.

So it just seems to hang when selecting everything and also much like the comment above you do have to close and reopen. That's a fine experience enough but maybe needs some messaging?
