I used Nvidia’s driver manager to install nvidia-driver-550.78 in my PopOS and it solved the issue, ACPI is right, no crashing or freezing!
I installed a list of installation dependency packages and used gcc 12 instead of gcc 11, which is PopOS’s default version. That solved the compiling issue when installing 550.78. Plus, I setup a SSD swap space instead of zram, which is PopOS’s default.
Problem Description Mostly, this driver woks fine and smooth. But sometimes it will crash, and the IO still works, display works, but you cannot open terminal, nautilus, and even load a new webpage in firefox. Seldom, it will freeze the whole system, IO will not work and display just freezes, but REISUB can work to reboot.
How to rerender it? Not very sure. It happens occassionly. Sometimes when you do nothing and wait your screen to dim(still not sarting dim). Sometimes when you wake up your screen after everything blacks out except the cursor. Sometimes, you just don't know.
Suspectful logs Every freezing happens with log(from /var/log/syslog) below, it is trimed to highlight the mostly related one. The whole log file is in attachment.
Hardware device information A Dell G16 7630 - 13th Generation Intel Core i7-13650HX - RTX 4060 8 GB with specifications below(lspci output).
Software information It runs on PopOS 22.04 LTS, with fully up-to-date packages. Gnome version is 42.9. All dell provided(to windows 11) firmware are up-to-date. With NVME-ACHI storage mode. The graphics profile Nvidia Graphics and Hybrid Graphics are both tested and same result - freezing. Driver is latest nvidia-driver-550. uname -a output:
Display manager is wayland. (Xorg is also tested, still freezing.)
Other important information When switching the graphics profile to Integrated Graphics(which means only using intel GPU), it works all fine, no freezing at all.
Suspected the hardware issue, all thorough mode diagnostic passed, windows 11 on the laptop works fine.
On my another dell laptop which runs 900 series nvidia card, still using nvidia-driver-550 and wayland, everything is fine, no freeze at all, just work fine.
