Improve usability of Full-Disk Encryption password screen #23

(I'm a UX designer and long time pop_os user. I'm posting this issue here as I think it's the right place. If not, please let me know and I'll open it there.)

After a bit of research, I've worked out that pop_os uses Plymouth for early boot process FDE animation/display. I'm opening this ticket as a way to provide some feedback for pop_os but also the Plymouth devs to improve the usability of the FDE password prompt. (there's an open issue in the Plymouth repo 150 requesting the same.)

I'd like to request a password reveal control for pop_os. Possible design approaches are shown in the Plymouth issue, and also below:

Maybe a dev/maintainer can confirm where this needs to be done - added upstream by the Plymouth devs, or can pop_os devs add it?

Thanks for your work on pop_os.

Thank you for the feedback. My first thought when seeing your mockups is that you assume Plymouth can have a mouse cursor to click the reveal icon, while it currently has no cursor. Since this is very early in the boot and is basically skinning what would otherwise be a console prompt, I'm not sure how much work it would take to add a cursor (I would assume the work would be significant, if possible at all.)

Hi @jacobgkau

There's 2 things here - 1) adding the password reveal, and 2) improving the prompt text.

you assume Plymouth can have a mouse cursor to click the reveal icon

For 1) above, yes, I do assume that. Between this ticket and the ticket in the Plymouth repo I was hoping to get an answer to that. I've asked that question in the Plymouth repo.

For 2) I thought this would be in the control of the pop_os devs. Is that true? If so, are there any comments on improving the prompt text?
