This repository is for the window tiling extension, Pop Shell. This does not look like an issue that could be caused by Pop Shell. If you open the Extensions app (green icon) and disable the Pop Shell extension, does this issue still occur? If so, then this issue should be in the general https://github.com/pop-os/pop repository (or a different repository for the correct component.)
It looks like you have an AMD GPU, what specific GPU are you using? Is this a System76 computer or is it third-party hardware?
When this happens, does Ctrl-Alt-F5 bring you to a full-screen terminal where you can log in? If so, I would recommend checking the dmesg log. If not, I would check the journalctl log once you've rebooted (or continuously capture the dmesg log with something like sudo dmesg >> dmesg.txt
.) One of the logs may have an indication of where the issue is (e.g. with the graphics driver in the kernel.)
System76 customers can reach out to support for technical assistance. For non-System76 hardware, you can seek community support on Reddit or Mattermost.

Thank you for your reply and advice. Unfortunately there is nothing of interest in journalctl. I am using the AMD RX580 GPU, third-party hardware (not System76). So far I've had to hard restart about 8 times today, and I'm unfortunately nowhere nearer to finding the cause.
This is the output of dmesg, not sure if you can maybe see any clues?
You did not answer my questions about whether this happens with Pop Shell disabled and whether Ctrl-Alt-F5 brings you to a full-screen terminal when this issue occurs. As Pop Shell would not cause this kind of issue, I've transferred the issue to the general Pop!_OS repository. I've also edited your comment to collapse the long output you pasted. (The dmesg
output is not useful, as it appears to have been taken after booting but before the crash occurred-- if the crash did occur before you took that output, then it's not being logged in dmesg
.)
This could be a hardware defect with your GPU, motherboard, or another component, and you would need to take this up with your computer's manufacturer if that is the case. This could also be a driver issue in the Linux kernel, although I am not seeing this happen with an RX 580 in a thelio-b1.6 (so if it's a driver issue, it may be specific to another component in your system, such as the motherboard.) What brand and model of computer is this, or what specific motherboard does it have? Does this issue also occur on Ubuntu and/or other Linux distributions?
I have the same issue (or rather had, now the system doesn't even start up properly). I have the same GPU. I found out that you can "fix" it by disabling the lower power states (for me anything under lvl 3) for the GPU core.
(1) Issue/Bug Description: Very randomly and very frequently, my installation of PopOS will become unresponsive and display a super glitchy screen (see below). The mouse responds but nothing else, not even R-E-I-S-U-B. This happens multiple times a day, after which I have to perform a hard restart.
(2) Steps to reproduce (if you know): Occurs very randomly unfortunately...
(6) Pop Shell version (run
apt policy pop-shell
or provide the latest commit if building locally):(7) Where was Pop Shell installed from: https://pop.system76.com/
(8) Monitor Setup (2 x 1080p, 4K, Primary(Horizontal), Secondary(Vertical), etc): 1 x 23" 1080p Samsung BX2540
(9) Other Installed/Enabled Extensions: Gnome extensions
Has anyone else experienced this?
