How to get Pop!_OS to recognize Microsoft Sculpt Bluetooth Mouse #170

Distribution - (run cat /etc/os-release) NAME="Pop!_OS" VERSION="17.10 (Artful Aardvark)" ID=ubuntu ID_LIKE=debian PRETTY_NAME="Pop!_OS 17.10 (Artful Aardvark)" VERSION_ID="17.10" HOME_URL="https://system76.com/pop" SUPPORT_URL="http://support.system76.com/" BUG_REPORT_URL="https://github.com/pop-os/pop/issues" PRIVACY_POLICY_URL="https://system76.com/privacy" VERSION_CODENAME=artful UBUNTU_CODENAME=artful

Issue/Bug Description I just installed Pop!_OS 17.10 on a Dell XPS 13 as the sole operating system. I would like to be able to use my Microsoft Sculpt Mouse with it, which is Bluetooth. However so far I am unable to set up this mouse using Settings > Bluetooth. When I try this, I very briefly see the Microsoft Sculpt Mouse name flash on the screen, but it doesn't stay there long enough for me to select it. What do I need to do to connect this mouse? It did work when I had Windows 10 running on the Dell XPS 13.

Steps to reproduce (if you know) Go into Settings > Bluetooth - Expected result: See an entry with the Microsoft Sculpt Mouse, so that I can pair it. Actual result: No entry for Microsoft Sculpt Mouse is on the screen long enough for me to select it. It flashes up there intermittently for a split second.

@rdfuhr Thanks for submitting this issue.

Do you perhaps have another Bluetooth device around to try and see if that connects? Sometimes all it may take is a reboot to get Bluetooth working again (OS and mouse). I am not too familiar with the mouse, but might also try seeing if you can connect it on another Linux distribution. Did any of these things work?

My other, perhaps stupidly obvious, question would be: is there a button on the mouse needed to press to pair the mouse?

@brs17 I did try pairing the mouse with an iMac and that didn't work either. My guess is (but I am not sure) that this particular mouse may be intended only to pair with computers running Windows. I also did try various combinations of rebooting the Pop!_OS computer and powering the mouse off and on. None of that worked. So I am now using the low tech alternative: a corded mouse --- and that works fine.

Do you know the exact model number of the mouse by any chance? I'd be curious to see if others(online) have had similar problems connecting to non-Windows machines.

According to this https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-us/products/mice/sculpt-comfort-mouse/h3s-00003#specsColumns-os it looks like the Microsoft Sculpt Comfort Mouse works only with Microsoft Windows and some Android devices, so it is not a bug in Linux or with the Pop!_OS distribution.

I have a sculpt comfort mouse and it works fine with Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 19.04 and Pop 19.04 (those are the ones I've tested with).
