Can you please provide some hardware details about this laptop, as well as how the external display is connected?
external monitor: Alienware 27 Gaming Monitor - AW2721D, QHD, 240Hz, Fast IPS ,1 ms, G-SYNC Ultimate, 4 SNB
I did a clean install of pop os last Sunday. Yesterday, at the end of the day, I suspend the laptop and this morning I try to wake it up, black screen. I had to hard reboot.
Thanks for that info. Can you share which graphics mode the oryp5 is in when this happens? If you're in Hybrid, which is the default, does switching to Nvidia mode fix the problem?
I'm on the Hybrid and I had this laptop for 2 years. I had this issue since the past maybe ... 2 months. I think pop os had 1 or 2 major upgrade and since then I have this issue.
It might still be a regression, but knowing whether it happens on Nvidia mode would still be valuable.
Side note: the experience on your external monitor will probably be much better in Nvidia mode anyway, due to this long-standing bug with the Nvidia driver: https://github.com/pop-os/nvidia-graphics-drivers/issues/61
your issue, I fix it with pop os support by reinstalling the Nvidia driver. Now I can use my external monitor without any lag
and the reason I don't use Nvidia mode it is because the fan go crazy and make more noise than my ps4 first generation hahah.
here what I got from tech support about this:
I suspect with the higher quality and larger display (27" external) it puts more load on the internal GPU. I would strongly suggest considering re-pasting your GPU/ CPU with high quality paste as this can help significantly with temps, noise of the system: https://support.system76.com/service-manuals/pdfs/Oryx/oryp5-service-manual.pdf
Arctic silver, Thermal grizzle, Noctua are usually my go-too high quality thermal paste's.

It did not happen if I woke up the laptop the next morning, only if it stay for more than a day.
Steps to reproduce (if you know): Power > Suspend > wait 2 days > move the mouse > Black Screen
Other Notes: I notice the behaviour happen since the last 2 upgrades (big upgrade).
