Open JG127 opened 1 year ago

JG127 commented 1 year ago

Distribution (run cat /etc/os-release):

NAME="Pop!_OS" VERSION="22.04 LTS" ID=pop ID_LIKE="ubuntu debian" PRETTY_NAME="Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS" VERSION_ID="22.04" HOME_URL="https://pop.system76.com" SUPPORT_URL="https://support.system76.com" BUG_REPORT_URL="https://github.com/pop-os/pop/issues" PRIVACY_POLICY_URL="https://system76.com/privacy" VERSION_CODENAME=jammy UBUNTU_CODENAME=jammy LOGO=distributor-logo-pop-os

Related Application and/or Package Version (run apt policy $PACKAGE NAME):

Issue/Bug Description:

Audio input and output does not work inside a Virtualbox VM. This used to work in Pop!_OS 21.10.

Steps to reproduce (if you know):

  1. Navigate to Settings > Sound
  2. Do the sound check for Output --> no sound
  3. Make a loud noise --> no input

Expected behavior:

The output sound check should say "front left" and "front right".

The input widget should show it measures sound.

Other Notes:

Virtualbox release 6.1.40, windows host. Extensions + Guest Additions installed

With the VM powered off go to the audio settings of the VM and change Host Audio Driver: from ALSA Audio Driver to PulseAudio. Now reboot the VM and test for sound again.

JG127 commented 1 year ago

Last time I tried that the sound was crackling badly. I'll retry asap. thx !

That's in case of a Linux host. I am on a windows 10 machine. Alas. What used to work was:

Host audio driver: Windows Directsound Audio controller: Intel HD Audio

Now, setting the audio controller to ICH AC97 is a slight improvement. There is in- and output functionality. With a stereo jack headphone connected however only the headphone micro works. The output is muted somehow. Plugging out the jack causes the sound to be sent to the speakers.

It may be worth trying the newest version VirtualBox 7.0.0.

JG127 commented 1 year ago

Is it stable for Pop!_OS ? Because they're still in beta.

It looks like VirtualBox 7.0.0 is now the stable release. As for how stable it is running a Pop!_OS guest on Windows 10, I can't say for sure. I did a fresh install of Pop!_OS on a Windows 10 machine and have been using it throughout the day. I have had no issues so far. Also sound is working for me out of the box with and without Extensions + Guest Additions.

If you would like to give it a try and it still doesn't work I will be happy to look into it further and help troubleshoot. Either way it would be good to know what machine you are running to check if there are any known issues specific to your hardware.

JG127 commented 1 year ago

It is an improvement indeed. (Not from a UX point of view, but that's another story. 🙂)

So, it's workable again to use a headphone. That is, as long as I don't unplug the headphone.

As for the hardware, this is an HP elitebook laptop, 4 cpu, 16 GB ram.

If you need me to do some investigation work, don't hesitate.

Is this is causing you issues? I have been unable to reproduce it.

JG127 commented 1 year ago

I've updated to the very latest, but it's still the same:

Once the headphone is plugged out and back in, there is no output anymore. A reboot is needed to make it work again.

Plugging the headphone out seems to break something. Or plugging it in for the second time maybe ? Maybe it's only happening for headphones using the stereo jack ?

Thanks for the new info. I'll look into this. Have you confirmed your Windows host is fully updated including all drivers? It might be worth checking the Device Manager.

JG127 commented 1 year ago

Many thanks indeed ! 🙂

I confirm the laptop is fully updated, including drivers.

Drivers for Conexant ISST Audio: 9.0.278.150, 18/11/2021
