Pop! OS 22.04 experiences random system freezes - Possible culprit NetworkManager #2818

Operativ commented 1 year ago

Distribution (run cat /etc/os-release):

Pop! OS 22.04 LTS

Related Application and/or Package Version (run apt policy $PACKAGE NAME):

NetworkManager

Issue/Bug Description:

NetworkManager hangs the system for a brief moment, along with currently playing audio experiencing a freeze/stutter. This happens regardless whether listening to music (eg. TIDAL via Firefox) or playing a game (via Steam, natively or Proton). I have experienced this doing two different things, with the log listing the same event at the exact moment of the freeze.

/var/log/syslog output at the exact moment: pop-os NetworkManager[743]: <info> dhcp4 (enp38s0): state changed new lease, address=(local IP here)

Steps to reproduce (if you know):

Look for the moment you've experienced a brief freeze. Then inspect /var/log/syslog to find that at the exact moment it's the NetworkManager doing strange stuff.

Expected behavior:

System runs smoothly without experiencing random freezes.

Other Notes:

I have experienced this on two installations of Pop! OS 22.04 LTS on the same PC configuration. I have WiFi and Bluetooth turned off. No wireless devices are connected to the PC via any dongle whatsoever.

I am using ProtonVPN via the built-in Linux 'client' that uses the IKEv2 protocol (not using any app for that). The only installed apps are Steam (apt) and Discord (flatpak).

The PC has the following hardware connected: monitor via DP 1.4, Logitech G502 mouse, Keychron K2 keyboard, Schiit Jotunheim 2 DAC+amp (external soundcard), Rode NT-USB microphone.

Motherboard: MSI MEG X570 Ace CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT (Sapphire Nitro+ OC SE) RAM: Patriot Viper Steel 16 GB, DDR4 Disk: M.2 PCIe NVMe 4.0 4x (Samsung 990 Pro)

I'm experiencing a similar problem. The next time I'll search by NetworkManager in the logs

Also experiencing this issue. Thanks for the tip on NetworkManager. I'll try to dig up supporting info as well.

I have an AMD-based laptop (latest BIOS and firmware updates) and experienced almost the same issue with freezes/stutters, especially when watching videos or listening to music. I did some research and found this: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217719.

After disabling fTPM from BIOS -> no issues so far.
