BTW, the system is not completely halted on the black screen - when you type characters, they appear on the screen (from top-left corner) - although there is no prompt whatsoever (not even the blinking underscore). CTRL+ALT+DEL does nothing, though, hard reset is needed :(
I see an update now in apt: linux-headers-6.8.0-76060800daily20240311-generic linux-headers-generic
- but am afraid to install it, since this will move my "old" to void and both current and old boot options will become broken - what can I do?
I'm experiencing a similar issue. I upgraded to the 6.8.0 kernel today, and now immediately after the BIOS boot screens the screen goes black with a single non-blinking horizontal cursor (as shown in attached image) and the system freezes. The only thing I can do at this point is hold the power button for a few seconds to force it to shut down. Booting with the previous kernel (6.6.10) works.

My system is completely frozen and does not accept any keyboard input. In fact, the LED on my keyboard goes off as soon as it hits this screen.

How is that an update, it appears to be the same exact version you posted originally?

Well, apt says it will be "updated":
Yes, that makes sense, since you are now booting with the previous version of the kernel. But the version it wants to upgrade to is not any newer than the version that started causing these problems for us.
I'm having the same problem as well. But, Mine got totally blank when I turned on the PC. Even the encryption password field was not showing.

Downgrading to oldkern.conf
fixes the issue following this intructions: https://github.com/pop-os/pop/issues/3099#issuecomment-1680432921
in the comment, it says press F9 to show the menu, but in my case, I'm pressing F1.
I'm using (default) Systemd-boot - please, how can I manually keep the currently functional kernel (booted via "oldkern": 6.6.10-76060610-generic) in the system before proceeding to apt upgrade in order not to end up with broken system unable to boot?
Set oldkern as default with the d
key

That is something else, I want to keep this kernel available (installed) in system, you know, normally, only latest + one older kernels are kept in the system, I want to have three (the functional as third backup) - that's what I'm asking for - I hope I'm more clear now (?) Thank you
I would like to apt upgrade, but prior to this, I need to have current kernel (6.6.10-76060610-generic
) available after apt upgrade - how do I do that, please? (Normally, only two kernels are available in the system at the current moment - I need three...)

OK, after some reading, I've made it, if somebody seeks similar help (using default systemd-boot
as bootloader), here it is:
initrd.img-previous
and vmlinuz-previous.efi
in the /boot/efi/EFI/Pop_OS-<UUID>
, I named them initrd-6.6.10.img
and vmlinuz-6.6.10.efi
# cat /boot/efi/loader/entries/Pop_OS-6.6.10.conf
title Pop!_OS on kernel 6.6.10
linux /EFI/Pop_OS-<UUID>/vmlinuz-6.6.10.efi
initrd /EFI/Pop_OS-<UUID>/initrd-6.6.10.img
options root=UUID=<UUID> ro quiet loglevel=0 systemd.show_status=false splash pci=nocrs
bootctl status
to verify if everything looks OKbootctl update
I did a video switch and -- if may be mistaken -- but it seemed to overwrite my old kernel in order to do that. Is there a best path to downgrade? I'm without a usable Pop!_OS on either kernel setting because of the accidental recompile.
I guess it's at least a tip for anyone else that it at least seemed to recompile those images when I switched from Hybrid to Discrete graphics.
Hello
after the update to 6.8.0 my OS doesn't boot anymore. I end up here
BusyBox v1.30.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.30.1-7ubuntu3) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands
(initramfs)
I have activated the old kernel as standard. I did it according to these instructions https://edv-loesungen.info/blog/79-starten-eines-gewuenschten-linux-boot-kernels-mit-grub

i think i'm experiencing same #3302 ..how do i exactly boot to the old kernel
After recent apt update && upgrade, system does not boot (kernel linux-image-6.8.0-76060800daily20240311-generic). It ends up on complete black screen.
Booting to pop_os oldkern fortunately works.
