Pop!_OS 18.10 will not log in to the desktop environment from GDM #428

This issue appears to have resurfaced.

https://github.com/pop-os/pop/issues/238

I can't login via GDM on Pop OS 18.10. I'm assuming this is after a recent update, as I rebooted a few days ago and all was fine. I'm back on Linux desktop after a long hiatus, so I'd need some help troubleshooting to determine the cause.

System: Dell XPS 15 9560

Distribution (run cat /etc/os-release): NAME="Pop!_OS" VERSION="18.10" ID=ubuntu ID_LIKE=debian PRETTY_NAME="Pop!_OS 18.10" VERSION_ID="18.10" HOME_URL="https://system76.com/pop" SUPPORT_URL="http://support.system76.com" BUG_REPORT_URL="https://github.com/pop-os/pop/issues" PRIVACY_POLICY_URL="https://system76.com/privacy" VERSION_CODENAME=cosmic UBUNTU_CODENAME=cosmic

Issue/Bug Description: Attempt to authenticate via GDM always rejects login. I'm unable to get past the login screen unless I Ctrl+Alt+F4 and do it via tty. I can then fire off "startx" and get Gnome running, though the theme and Pop-specific features are inactive.

Steps to reproduce (if you know): Attempt to login on boot.

Expected behavior: Successful login with correct password - access to desktop.

Not a fix (temporary solutions), but:

Installing and defaulting to lightdm makes no difference. Still can't login from a manager. Oddly, this causes anything Chromium-based (Chrome, Slack, VS Code, etc.) to FUBAR my cursor on my hidpi screen. Not using the snaps for these. Pop somehow managed this in the theme but am unsure how to fix it. Was so excited about Pop! I thought I'd finally found a solid Linux desktop after 20 yrs, and was seriously considering a System 76 laptop on my next refresh. I know Linux is for tinkerers and I appreciate that, but I'm too busy to afford losing a day to something like this, anymore.

Reinstalling the System 76 driver fixed the goofy hidpi mouse pointer issue...but nothing else.

mmstick commented 5 years ago

The gdm package hasn't been updated since October, and the pop-session package hasn't been updated since August, so I don't think that's the issue you're experiencing.

List of most recently installed packages. Includes gimp and related libs, which I just installed a few mins ago. The rest must have been from a batch of updates.

I don't see any packages that would cause this issue in there. The original issue was a bug in gnome-session.

I just started getting this but only when attempting to log into X11. Wayland works. In case it’s related it was after I was messing with some keybindings/xmodmap and after a restart. Earlier I was able to log back into X11 by unplugging the external display – going to try that again. Just now, I also saw that my lock-screen background had reverted to the robot. Finally, just before I restarted, Alt + Left Arrow started logging me out.

Update: The issue only manifests when the external monitor is plugged in.
