Black screen after logging in, but terminal log-in works #755

Distribution (run cat /etc/os-release): NAME="Pop!_OS" VERSION="19.10" ID=ubuntu ID_LIKE=debian PRETTY_NAME="Pop!_OS 19.10" VERSION_ID="19.10" HOME_URL="https://system76.com/pop" SUPPORT_URL="http://support.system76.com" BUG_REPORT_URL="https://github.com/pop-os/pop/issues" PRIVACY_POLICY_URL="https://system76.com/privacy" VERSION_CODENAME=eoan UBUNTU_CODENAME=eoan LOGO=distributor-logo-pop-os

Related Application and/or Package Version (run apt policy $PACKAGE NAME):

Issue/Bug Description: On boot after a shutdown I reach the login screen (seems to take a while) and login. The screen goes black (not even a mouse cursor) and no keyboad commands do anything. If I use the terminal to log in instead then I can log in and use the computer from the terminal. If I then switch back to the graphical interface and log in via that it works and goes to the desktop.

Steps to reproduce (if you know): Shut down and boot back up, then log in.

Expected behavior: Should log-in to the desktop via the graphical log in screen.

Other Notes: I have the 'intel/amd' version as I have a Ryzen processor with onboard GPU.

I'm new to linux in general and the login I use at the terminal is not the same as the graphical log-in screen where it's my full name, if that matters. It's my user name I think.

It's not happening every time, either. Sometimes I can log straight in.

So if I understand correctly, when you boot up, you get the graphical log in screen, but after login the screen goes blank?

My first guess is that somehow you have selected a desktop environment that isn't fully supported. If you can access the graphical login, there should be fields for your username / pw. Near them is a 'cog' icon with a drop down menu.

This allows you to select different desktop environments. Different DE's use different display managers.

The default environment for Pop OS is modern gnome which uses the gdm3. If you try to log into a different environment that relies on, say, lightdm, that can cause the result you described.

Make sure that the correct environment is selected from the drop down. Let me know if that helps.

I'll try it if it happens again, but so far it hasn't!

Thanks
