First cut at merging upstream 0.2.124. Will have to figure out how to test it, and it will be interesting to see how this compares to @illusional's #310.

I've now compared #310 to this, and applying the remaining changes …0.2.124 to #310 results in no significant differences from this PR. So both @illusional and I have made the same merge decisions up to 0.2.123 ✅
