Merge rocksdb-experiment into main #164

Once the wanted features for the new statebackend, together with the checkpointing and recovery, has been implemented, tested, and cleaned up, we will merge it into main. This is an issue for that event, just a reminder that we should do a larger code cleanup and review for merging.
