Wilkes and Wheeler's 1951 book The Preparation of Programs for an Electronic Digital Computer contains the first published API specification. Joshua Bloch considers that Wilkes and Wheeler "latently invented" the API because it is more of a concept that is discovered than invented.[6] - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/API#:~:text=Wilkes%20and%20Wheeler's%201951%20book,that%20is%20discovered%20than%20invented.
