Testing utterances! I bailed on this stop-gap solution and used Kendra Little's Moving From WordPress to an Azure Static Site with Hugo blog post instead. The only difference, really, is that I use GitHub Pages and she uses Azure Static Site.

You can build your own search with lunr.js. Check this out: https://learn.cloudcannon.com/jekyll/jekyll-search-using-lunr-js/

I used it on a github page with few texts, and it works as expected. Maybe this is an alternative way if you don't like the google search or you want to have a search interface in your own design.
