Potcoin dead ? #8

Looks like it ? I mean the network is still active and I see loads of people trading, but no developer activity since 2015 ?

vikoiv commented 3 years ago

No, it is not dead project, just little baked currently :D Since PotCoin is the leading cryptocurrency all changes will be done very conservative way.

Just a heads up, There is a group of people claiming to be the potcoin devs on Facebook. and they have acquired potcoin.com. and even got a message posted on bitcoin.com. Claiming to be moving the potcoin network to Nexus.io as a token and they are running a token swap until February 1st trying to steal everyone's potcoin. Don't fall for this scam, and if by some chance it actually is the original potcoin devs then I don't support it and will continue the old legacy chain myself if need be. I mine about 200 blocks a day and have enough coins to propagate the network so. I'm not very happy about this. They also appear to be attacking the network as of yesterday. Somehow my potcoin client is showing I have a higher average weight than the total network weight and it is bugging out my client, and my other client is producing blocks super slow. Something odd is going on... I usually make over 200 blocks a day and the last day I've only made 2 blocks, and block time has been increased to 2 hours between blocks on average. it's like someone is forcing the network to retarget somehow... I run the NanoCheeZe coin and do a lot of backend supporting of Bitgems, Bottlecaps, Novacoin, and Hobonickels. I will update this with my friends if need be...

I hold Potcoin since 2017. I want to help you help the network. I am a full stack developer since 1995. How can I get involved? I also want to acquire more Potcoin, but can't use any available exchanges because I'm in the U.S. and we are all well cared for children protected from the cryptocurrency boogeymen. Do you know where I can acquire more Potcoin?

I got into about an hour long discussion with the people running the potcoin page on FB. The guy in charge claims the original author has died. I called them scammers. and he got really offended. Said I was making some heavy allegations. I told him damn straight I was. anyways, to shorten up the conversation I had with this guy. I told him to update the github to prove he is in anyway legit. I don't think he has the ability. Again using the death of the original author as the reason I guess. Although I know github can work with us as to returning control to whoever it needs to go to. As I said, I run the NanoCheeZe coin. based on hobonickels/bottlecaps. All these coins needs an update, bottlecaps, bitgems, potcoin, hobonickels, novacoin. They all have some unique features or view options that the other are missing such as the multiwallet function in hobonickels, and the sorting and viewing abilities, and the minting pages. or the stake splitting. So we need to get a team going that can A) update all these coins to be on PAR with bitcoin and litecoin/dogecoin code. ie open ssl needs an update which requires an almost total rewrite of certain bits of code. I tried or started. I didn't have the time. But I already have potcoin included in my NanoCheeZe app, which is sadly dead at the moment, but I think I'm gonna bring it back and push to get potcoin updated. Just for the record, I stand by my stance with these Potcoin devs. If you can't update the github then I don't believe you are legit. And potcoin 2.0 will never succeed with doubts like that. Seems like a token scam to me. Plus potcoin 2.0 is just planned to be a tokenized coin on another chain that really is not decentralized. They have dedicated machines too run nexus io which is what these guys are claiming to run on. BS... That's not a coin then. its a token. SO, everyone make sure you call potcoin 2.0 what it is Not Pot either FPOT or NPOT (Fake POT or Not POT) This is POT.... They are defiently attacking the network though. We need to adjust the coin combine algorithm to not combine blocks if network difficulty is below such a threshold ie, i have my client set to do this already. It's the only reason the potcoin network has been running smoothly for the last few years. but I only have about 1000 coin blocks staking. It seems you need nearly 5000 to 6000 blocks right now to propagate the network. So, I need more people to split their coin blocks into many multiple addresses or we need to update the app to do it for them in the background. or the network is gonna keep stalling out like it did this week. Another thing, this "dev" at potcoin 2.0 kept telling me I was out of the loop. As if anyone is in the loop. potcoin has been dormant for 7 years, nobody is checking the page every week. or even every year lol. This coin swap scam they are pulling is gonna leave tons of potcoin supporters in the dust and all the cold storage wallet holders as SOL. AGAIN i DO NOT SUPPORT THIS TAKEOVER. I would like to know more about what the community knows about this. This potcoin 2.0 guy keeps asking me to book a xoom call with him.... Not really interested. until I find out the status of how they came about control of the website and such... I would venture a guess that they simply bought the domain after the renewal expired.... I'm not doubting they may have known the creator, but I don't think this is what he would want. to destroy his coin and network.... Potcoin has one of the largest networks of any legacy coin... How stupid... At the very least they could come over here on a new user and address the community right here in issues... But as of now, I have to continue with my original assessment, Potcoin 2.0 is a scam. DO NOT SEND THESE PEOPLE ANY COINS!!!

cybershrapnel commented 2 years ago

BTW, Only active potcoin exchange right now is this one https://freiexchange.com/market/POT/BTC The government is not gonna come after you for trading POTcoin :P

cybershrapnel commented 2 years ago

and honestly, after speaking with the potcoin FB page yesterday, I expected the first thing that they would do is either come over here and update this page, or at least post a comment from a new user starting the discussion like I said. Noone even bothered to come over here and say a single word now, before, or ever. SO.... It's not looking good for those guys... imo of course.

cybershrapnel commented 2 years ago

I've done some brief digging into this claim about the creator being dead. Joel Yaffe was the creator. He left the project back in 2015 after being accused of fraud and stealing $300K from a potcoin investor. No record of an obituary and all sites claim he still has an active phone number and address in richmond. Looks like he left Canada after this happened and went to the US.??? I'm no reporter, this is just general info available. here's a link to some info https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1289745.0

So even if the these guys claim of potcoin creator dying was true, he left the project long before the last update to the project. He hasn't been involved since basically the beginning. The community looks to have taken over. So it looks like we as the community have to take over.... Potcoin 2.0 is definitely a scam. for sure. someone in Canada probably acquired the business that guy owned before the fraud stuff. and is trying to pull some kind of hail mary restart lol. We all know a coin on another chain is not a coin. so. I'm not even gonna bother with those guys again.

cybershrapnel commented 2 years ago

I think this is him, but not sure. maybe I'll try to call when I get bored later. https://www.truepeoplesearch.com/find/person/pxn22u82r88r6r26l088l

cybershrapnel commented 2 years ago

also, I'd just note that whoever is in charge over there at potcoin 2.0 doesn't realize or understand that the github page is always considered the official resource.... They think their website is the official source. very sus

I noticed there are no resources for obtaining the windows qt exe from anywhere anymore. I have forked this project over to my repositories and will eventually try to continue development if I can get a few people to help. I have published the last known windows exe release to the releases section on my fork. Hope this helps anyone looking for the download. Best I can do to help for now.

My fork: https://github.com/cybershrapnel/Potcoin

windows release: https://github.com/cybershrapnel/Potcoin/releases/tag/POT

One fun thing we could do to revive this coin, other than update the UI with those features I mentioned above, is someone could help me finish the PoR protocol that I was developing for NanoCheeZe coin. Proof of Reclamation, the idea is that after 5 years of dormancy on a wallet, the wallet address would become eligible for reclamation. ie, we assume at that point the wallet keys has been lost or the owner died. so a client would search for an eligible address in the DB, and then on that clients next POS block that it mines, it would include a OpReturn or even simpler just send a minimum amount of coin to that address that would now flag it as POR recoverable. that wallet would no longer be eligible for sending TXs but users that submit POS blocks while there is a + balance in the eligible POR pool would be able to mine that extra bit of coin up to a certain amount. so say a dead wallet had 1 million coins in it, miner A would include 1 extra transaction in their POS block they mine that sends .000001 coin to that wallet, a simple recode in the client would prevent old addresses from being able to send coins, so that would be a simple implementation there. there are several ways to implement this, but again, i never finished it. seems like it might be kind of useful to implement here.... you could make a third totally separate type of POR block to go along with POW and POS, or you could simply flag the address with a POS block and then just get extra rewards on POS blocks until the POR pool is drained back to 0. basically a way to reclaim old and lost coins in the blockchain without having to worry that someone may come back and try to spend them later after being reclaimed by the system. Basically would add a time limit to inactive wallets. you would need to either move you coins once every 5 years, send some coin from that address, or stake you coins. if you did nothing for 5 years your address dies. and 5 years is just a number, probably make it 10 or 15 :P It needs to be long enough to assume they aren't coming back for their coin, but short enough that its not older than where the bulk of coins were minted. I'd possibly even put out a solid bounty to get this implemented correctly as I think other coins would adapt this model eventually as well. Just think about the millions in bitcoin that have been lost, never to be recovered. this process would let them be recovered, technically they would be new coins, and the old coins just flagged unusable as they would be in a banned address unable to be spent ever. even with proper keys. so even if a quantum computer cracked these old wallets some day, they'd be unspendable.

ok, so there still is a repo on here with the binaries Who knows how long it will last. I suspect at some point in time these guys in charge of potcoin.com will gain access to this github and remove it all. I want to note that doing it later proves nothing, they need to acknowledge ownership now. https://github.com/potcoin/Potcoin-Binaries

atouchman commented 2 years ago

I looked at whois. Looks like potcoin.com has been registered and renewed since January 28, 2013...someone in Panama via GoDaddy.com. Registration expires January 28, 2022 at 1:55:22 AM UTC. Name Name Server at Cloudflare:

im curious to see if it gets renewed, considering the potcoin swap deadline is supposedly right after that, february 1st. and no wallet in sight lol It's a scam

cybershrapnel commented 2 years ago

i mean, honestly, one of the owners of this repo is "potcoin.com" so these guys at potcoin.com running potcoin 2.0 should be able to easily come on here and just update the readme to say, hey, it's official, potcoin 2.0 is launching, get in on the swap. But they aren't and haven't done anything of the sort.... I can't emphasize enough how sketch that is, I just want to make sure it has been pointed out multiple times before they come in later and say we were working on it lol...

cybershrapnel commented 2 years ago

DUDE!! Look at this! THis is what these clowns are really upto.. Even look at the site, THey are faking this new potcoin app and pretending that the current coin is being used by it, even though they are running this token swap. This is absolutely crazy!| They charging anywhere from 2 pennies to 32 cents a piece for pot coins... lol https://potwallet.com/trade/buy?af=1fe15860&__cf_chl_f_tk=9htYx.Tlc26UbrrvDmXmiDfnhMpBkx6Z20uFOcIQuxs-1642541940-0-gaNycGzNCL0

I've removed several million Potcoin from the Staking pool. At this point, I don't want to help the network cash out these coins for the swap. Without my pool of coins minting, the network will slow down to one block every 4 or 6 hours and people trying to cash out coins are gonna get stuck with coins in staking mode unable to send or their tx will get stuck waiting for a block/confirms and or stake before it gets accepted. I 'm very tempted to just cash out all my potcoin on the exchanges, I saw a few people already did looking at the trading logs yesterday. but oh well.

cybershrapnel commented 2 years ago

well, it's only been 7 hours since the last block :P lol https://chainz.cryptoid.info/pot/

Don't step all over the community that supported you!!!!! /sigh
