I am a complete and total noob about MSX both emulation and actual hardware #97

Open SirPeteThe1st opened 1 year ago

I had recently inherited a Panasonic A1-GT MSX computer from my uncle, and I want to try a trick that can run simulated cassette data encoded as wav files. To do that, I want to see if my .dsk test file can run in an emulator before I ruin it further by using tools that are incompatible with my Mac or not knowing what I'm doing.

I figured it would be as easy as running a .dsk file in the emulated drive, but me being a stupid-ass noob who has absolutely no experience with the MSX, I just can't do it. Is there a Dummies manual for this emulator for dummies like myself?

ppeccin commented 1 year ago

Hi!

You can just drag your .dsk file on top of the emulador screen. Then boot the MSX. Does that work? It's that easy!

If your disk contains bootable software, it should run.

If not, that will depend on what is on the disk. Is it MSX-DOS format? BASIC files?

It's in .dsk format. I also want to convert it to a .wav format so I can trick the hardware into thinking it's loaded from a cassette tape.

I think it's some kind of game.

ppeccin commented 1 year ago

I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to do! Or even if that would be possible, depending on what you have on the disk.

Yes it's in a .dsk file. But you can have many things in a dsk...

I don't know if I can help you. Maybe if you tell a bit more about what is in the dsk, or send the dsk file itself. In private (not here) if you want.

This is not a file, this is a video link :-)

OK, I assume then that you have that game on a .dsk file?

So what is the problem? Why can't you run it on the emulator? What happens?

And what are you trying to do with your real A1-GT? Do you want to write this .dsk file to a real diskette to put on your GT and then run it?

The video link was to explain the file, which should have been attached to the email.

So I move the disk into the emulator, reboot the system as you recommended, but the emulator just keeps rebooting and rebooting while the disk icon where I've uploaded the .dsk file to is flashing red as like a warning.

Also, as I have mentioned before, I wish to convert the .dsk file into an audio file similar to the audio track of a cassette tape. From there, I want to run the converted audio file from a source, like an mp3 player, into the actual hardware. That part I have found no google results.

Hope this explanation helps.

Well, a few things.

I don't know why the .dsk you have does not run in the emulator. Perhaps if you send me the file I could have a look

You can't just "convert" any .dsk to a cassette tape or wav file. It depends on the software and format of the files on the disk. I can use a different structure and software that will not run from a cassette interface. It may or may not be possible. Why do you want to do this? Why not save the .dsk image to an actual diskette?

If you really have a FS A1-GT, this is an MSX Turbo R computer. Those do not have a cassette port. You can't load cassette tapes directly like "older" MSX computers (MSX1, MSX2 and MSX2+). To play a game from a cassette image you will need some tricks that even I am not very familiar with.

But I think you wouldn't need it, since your game is in DISK format... Unless your physical drive is damaged. But then you'd be better with other disk interfaces like those SD-card interfaces.

Send me the .dsk if you can.

I do believe I had already attached the file to my last emails as file attachments. I do not know why you have not received it. Here it is again:

As for converting the .dsk file to audio, I remember my very first computer, the Timex Sinclair needing to save programs to cassette, and I was curious if all old computers could do this. I guess not all.

As far as actual diskettes go, I would need some kind of USB floppy drive to copy the .dsk file to, and I don't know who still sells those at affordable prices.

Anyway, I hope you get this file attachment this time. I dragged & dropped it into the body of this email, so it shouldn't get lost.

So what is the problem? Why can't you run it on the emulator? What happens?

And what are you trying to do with your real A1-GT? Do you want to write this .dsk file to a real diskette to put on your GT and then run it?

I see... When you run it in a Turbo R you get glitched graphics.

I'll fix that for you. Some games have "problematic" code that assumes a certain slot configuration on the machine, which is wrong per standard. This game is one of those that need that POKE to run in certain machines, which I removed... But that same poke makes it NOT run in other machines. I'll replace the command for a more correct and generic one that should work on any machine.

Later today I'll send you the fixed dsk, ok?

All right!

Here is your fixed DSK image that shoud run on any machine: Oh Shit! FIXED 2.zip

And here is your game disk converted to CAS format. Tested in MSX1, MSX2 and MSX2+: Oh Shit! Cassette.zip

Let me know if you have difficulties loading the tape. On WebMSX, if you load the tape file with the machine powered OFF, it will automatically start and load the program. Or you may load the tape file, then click "Run Program" on the Tape menu, and it will also issue the commands to load automatically.

In a real MSX, you must load the tape and run the commands yourself: CLOAD and then RUN.

Have fun!

Paulo

Thank you for your work.

Tell me, is there anything I am able to do on my MSX computer? The Panasonic A1-GT that is?
