Renaming judgements #25237

Open Walavouchey opened 8 months ago

From peppy's comment at https://github.com/ppy/osu-wiki/pull/8245#issuecomment-1378266411

Previous MISS MEH OK GOOD GREAT PERFECT
Proposed MISS BAD OK GOOD GREAT MAX

(they're always displayed in uppercase in lazer)

Reasoning is to align with expectations of players of other VSRGs, where in many cases "perfect" doesn't correspond to the highest judgement (where there'd be "marvellous" or other names). "meh" also doesn't seem to be used anywhere

for reference, here's a chart of rhythm game judgement names (source: https://twitter.com/MarloMalody/status/1247834356800016384 who credits it to "PHIZERさん")

It's interesting to note that we are the only game to use "MAX" and there's so many others using perfect. Makes you think twice 🤔 .

It might be nicer for osu! to have its own terminology for the perfect hit result, as opposed to following other rhythm games. Especially since almost none of them follow a specific term themself (there's kool, p-great, marvellous, justice, and so on). Following osu!mania and choosing "MAX" as osu!'s own terminology for perfect hits sounds pretty good to me.

In addition, our current scoring mechanics award no extra accuracy for HitResult.Perfect on osu!mania, which makes "MAX" further fitting as a hit result that maximises the total gained score of the play. But that's a bit of a weak argument since it's not an enforced rule and any ruleset could make such hit result affecting accuracy.

a local feature i can think of to fix this is to have the theme set timing windows based on what is set in the .ini so you can just have 1 judgement or 20 but for score submission it still uses the argon judgements so someone cant make a theme where its only perfect and in has 1 one second window to hit it and be the top of the charts or make it where it only submits the final score but i can see some users not being too happy with that solution as they might want to know what they missed in the chart when they got that score

Perfect isn't perfect, marvelous is perfect! No doubt this is a bit of a funny DDR joke, however I don't think osu has any obligation to follow any other game pattern. Players likely interpret the judgements within the vacuum of the game.

Keep it simple, and ensure the word correctly corresponds to the accuracy penalty.

300 - 100% 100 - 33% 50 - 16.6%

My personal vote.

300 - Perfect 100 - Good 50 - OK or Okay X - Miss

MAX just seems a little off brand for osu's identity although I do like the shortness of the word, perhaps not all caps is best, Max. I deffinitely think Good is more apropriate than Great, which I feel is too positive. I also feel that OK, or Okay as the grade for 50's properly conveys to the player that they just barely hit the circle in rhythm, and that they can do far better. We hate getting 50's just about as much as women hate being told they look "just okay" before a date.
