Remote Desktop Command and Control Swap not working #2594

Just installed Karabiner and it's working fine to remap my control and command in the OS. Currently running the latest version of MacOS Big Sur 11.1

However using this .json to do the same in the Microsoft remote desktop app isn't working - https://ke-complex-modifications.pqrs.org/json/virtual_machine.json

I've tried to uninstall but still the same issue, even tried to use a few different .json files to try and remap it in RDP

Any help is much appreciated, here are my logs below!

There seems to some mismatch with your Karabiner-Elements and it's accompanying programs. I suggest you to first uninstall Karabiner-Elements [1]. Then install latest beta version. Note that, this may not be related with your issue, but still, it's better to solve this.

Have you checked bundle identifier? It might have changed. To check bundle identifier of MS Remote Desktop,

  1. Open EventViewer - Karabiner-EventViewer.app or Karabiner-Elements menu > Launch EventViewer
  2. Go to Frontmost Application tab.
  3. Switch to MS Remote Desktop app.
  4. Switch back to EventViewer and you should see bundle identifier and file path of the app.

Next, check if this bundle identifier matches with any of the identifiers in your config. If it does not, then the bundle identifier you just got to each rule in config. You could also try adding file path into file_paths[1] after bundle_identifiers. If it is still not working, then I don't know. :-(

You don't need to restart Karabiner if you edited karabiner.json. It will automatically reload the config.

If you got bundle identifier from EventViewr, then Karabiner should detect it. There are windows which Karabiner can't detect, but those be won't shown in EventViewer too.

Can you post your config? Maybe in gist? Just to make sure it isn't a JSON error.[1] Although it is probably reduntant, try adding file path of the app.

[1] See if any error is shown in Karabiner-Elements Preferences > Log tab.

Remove all "conditions": [...] in the rules and try those modifications in the app.

Swap left/right command and control in virtual machine/remote desktop in your karabiner.json rules won't trigger because you already swapper command and control at the beginning and Karabiner always use the first matched rule (top-bottom). Because you have already swapped it, adding Swap left/right command and control in VM/RD is pointless. If you want the swapping to work in all apps, you should use simple modification IMO.

Can you try this? -

  1. Create new profile and enable it.
  2. Swap control and command using simple modification.
  3. See if the keys are swapping in MS Remote Desktop app.

If this is not working, unfortunately, there is nothing we can do. It could be that MSRD is interfering in some way, or a bug in Karabiner (unlikely though).

That's strange. What does EventViewer show when you press command and control?

Can you try this in a clean profile?

  1. Map command to control.
    • what do you get when you press command?
  2. Remove above modification and map control to command.
    • what happens when you press control?

Remember to check EventViewer when you do this.

For those who have the issue:

I had the same issue earlier and have multiple rules in action. After hours of trial and error, the problem was solved when I move the rules for ms remote to the top of my list of rules. (there seems to be some conflicts that I do not quite understand).
